Chapter 7

God the Vindicator

1A plaintive song of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, the Benjaminite.

2 LORD my God, in you I take refuge; rescue me; save me from all who pursue me, n Pss 6, 5; 22, 21 . 3Lest they maul me like lions, tear me to pieces with none to save.

4 LORD my God, if I am at fault in this,* if there is guilt on my hands, 5If I have repaid my friend with evil— I spared even those who hated me without cause— 6Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, trample my life to the ground, and leave me dishonored in the dust. o Ps 143, 3 .   Selah

7Rise up, LORD, in your anger; rise against the fury of my foes. p Pss 9, 4; 19, 20 . Wake to judge as you have decreed. 8Have the assembly of the peoples gather about you; sit on your throne high above them, 9O LORD, judge of the nations. Grant me justice, LORD, for I am blameless, free of any guilt. 10Bring the malice of the wicked to an end; uphold the innocent, O God of justice, who tries hearts and minds. q Pss 17, 3; 26, 2; 35, 24; 43, 1; 139, 23; Jer 17, 10; 20, 12 .

11A shield before me is God who saves the honest heart. r Ps 3, 4 . 12God is a just judge, who rebukes in anger every day. 13If sinners do not repent, God sharpens his sword, strings and readies the bow, s Ps 11, 2 . 14Prepares his deadly shafts, makes arrows blazing thunderbolts. t Is 50, 11 .

15Sinners conceive iniquity; pregnant with mischief, they give birth to failure. u Jb 15, 35; Is 59, 4 . 16They open a hole and dig it deep, but fall into the pit they have dug. v Pss 9, 16; 35, 8; 57, 7; Prv 26, 27; Eccl 10, 8; Sir 27, 26 . 17Their mischief comes back upon themselves; their violence falls on their own heads.

18I praise the justice of the LORD; I celebrate the name of the LORD Most High. w Pss 18, 50; 30, 5; 135, 3; 146, 2 .
