Reading Guide

An opening ( 1.1–2 ) and closing ( 6.21b ) hold together two larger parts; one that gives the background for the instructions ( 1.3–20 ); and the instructions themselves ( 2.1–6.21a ). The background explains Timothy's task ( 1.3–11 ) and offers examples ( 1.12–20 ) to show the need for sound teaching. Instructions for the household of God ( 2.1–3.13; 5.1–6.2a ) precede discourses on sound and unsound teachings ( 3.14–4.16; 6.2b–21a ).
