the name for the author of one of the source documents of the Pentateuch. The Yahwist, from the beginning of his work (Genesis 2,4), habitually uses the name Yahweh for God (as opposed to the author of another of the documents, the Elohist, who uses the Hebrew word' elohim, or God). It is generally agreed among scholars that the Yahwist's account is the oldest of the documents. See Elohist; Pentateuch; Priestly.
