    Enlightenment

    the philosophical movement that flourished in the 18th century in continental Europe (primarily Germany and France) and England. It was characterized by an emphasis on the importance of human reason and reflection on actual experience, a tendency to favor materialist as opposed to religious views, optimism about human progress, and pragmatic approaches to politics and ethics. The movement within Judaism corresponding to the Enlightenment, and influenced by it, is called Haskalah.
