The Greek name for the land of Edom. After 586 BCE Edomites began to move into Judaea from Beth-zur to Beer-sheba, but the area changed hands several times in the last two centuries BCE. Herod the Great was an Idumaean and this partly accounts for his unpopularity among the Jews. Some Idumaeans are noted as being in the multitude who followed Jesus (Mark 3: 8).
