References in the OT (e.g. Jer. 29: 5; S. of S. 4: 12–16) show that gardens were both productive and also much valued. The garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14: 32; cf. John 18: 1), where Jesus prayed before his arrest, is designated simply ‘a garden’ by John. In the OT there is the mythical garden of Eden (Gen. 2: 15) and a garden of eschatological hope (Isa. 51: 3).
