A place of holiness or security.

The Israelites trekking through the wilderness believed that the Lord was present with them in a portable ‘tent of meeting’ (Exod. 25: 8 ff.; 29: 4) and in the Temple at Jerusalem, when Solomon had built it. The Presence was located in the Holy of Holies, the innermost section, which only the high priest was allowed to enter.

Six cities were set aside as places of sanctuary or refuge (Josh. 20: 7–9) for persons fleeing from avengers after an accidental homicide.
