A place a little to the north of Jerusalem (Isa. 10: 32) where eighty‐five priests lived with Abimelech. David, in flight from Saul, was given refuge and food there (the holy bread of the presence). When Saul heard of this through Doeg the Edomite, he ordered the death of the priests, which Doeg carried out (1 Sam. 22: 6–23). Only Abiathar survived—hence the mistake in Mark 2: 26 (not repeated by Matthew or Luke) which mentions Abiathar instead of Abimelech.
