The Oxford Handbook of Biblical Studies Provides a comprehensive survey of Biblical scholarship in a variety of disciplines.

History (II): The Flood to the Exodus

Little light from the ancient Near East falls on this period (Egypt is not included), though a case has been made that some personal names, such as Jacob and Benjamin, have Amorite parallels, and that a number of archaic and poetic Hebrew terms are paralleled in Amorite as known from the Mari documents, from the site on the Euphrates close to the modern Iraqi–Syrian border. In general the case is well made, but the material is not restricted to this one section of the Hebrew Bible, and its impact is more on the meaning of particular words than on the whole narrative. But the period of the settlement in the promised land and of the judges and the early monarchy—even the great King Solomon—so far lack corroboration or amplification from non-biblical sources.
