This chapter covers the New Testament ground in a rather different way from many books, which specialize in either the historical or the literary aspects. A broadly based introduction to the New Testament materials has been co-written by Achtemeier, Green, and Thompson 2001. An unusual presentation of the earliest stages of the process of experiencing Jesus is offered in Theissen 1987 (and more recent reissues). A Jewish perspective on the New Testament materials is Geza Vermes, The Changing Faces of Jesus (New York: Viking; Harmondsworth: Penguin, 2001). Two other substantial treatments of particular angles on the critical questions are Gerd Theissen's analysis, in Religious Studies terms, of the symbolic system of early Christianity, A Theory of Primitive Christian Religion (London: SCM Press, 1999); and a study of Christianity from the aspect of worship (particularly baptism and the Eucharist), Étienne Nodet and Justin Taylor, The Origins of Christianity: An Exploration (Collegeville, Minn.: Liturgical Press, 1998).
