Basic Structure and Contents.

1 Esdras can be rightly called ‘The Book of Destruction and Restoration’. It describes the history of Israel from the last period of the monarchy, at the eve of its downfall, until the reading of the law and the celebration of the festivals in the time of Ezra, the ultimate expression of restoration. This long period encompasses three historical foci: the last kings of Judah and the fall of Judah and Jerusalem (ch. 1 ); the material restoration of Jerusalem during the reigns of Cyrus and Darius (chs. 2–7 ); the spiritual restoration under the leadership of Ezra (chs. 8–9 ).
