The Oxford Illustrated History of the Bible A richly illustrated account of the story of the Bible written by leading scholars.

The Future of Feminist Scholarship

Feminist biblical scholarship, like feminist study in general, is constantly becoming more sophisticated, more expansive, as it builds on the work of previous generations. New fields of enquiry are opening up: critics are becoming increasingly interested in the afterlives of biblical women, in art, film, and popular culture, and the consideration of gender has inevitably led to questions about masculinity, homosexuality, and issues of power and inequality, as well as questions specifically limited to the ‘female’. Yet even as the field is expanding, it also goes on, quite simply, articulating why the Bible is problematic for so many contemporary readers, and why feminist critics must ultimately be something more than a sort of special-interest group on the margins of the academy. After all, women are quite a distinctive ‘minority’—the only ‘minority’ that makes up 52 per cent of the world.
