Text Commentary

1Then came a voice saying to me twice, Abraham, Abraham! 2,3And I said, Here am I. And the voice said, Behold, it is I: do not be afraid; for I am the mighty God, who was before the world, 1 Lit. ‘age’ or ‘aeon’. who in the beginning 2 Lit. ‘formerly’. K reads the clause ‘who fomerly created heaven and earth and then the first light of the world and the age’. created the light of the world. 1 Lit. ‘age’ or ‘aeon’. 4And I am your shield, and I am your helper. 5Go and get me a calf of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a pigeon, and set out a pure sacrifice for me. 6And in that sacrifice I will set out for you the secrets of the ages, and tell you hidden things; and you shall see great things, which you have not seen; for you have loved me to seek me out, and I have called you my friend. 3 Lit. ‘lover’: cp. 2 Chron. xx. 7; Isa. xli. 8; James ii. 23 . 7But abstain from all cooked food, 4 Lit. ‘food which comes from fire’. and from drinking wine, and from anointing yourself with oil for forty days. 8And then set out the sacrifice for me, which I have commanded you, in the place I will show you – on a high mountain. 9And there will I show you the ages, which have been created and established, made and renewed, by my word; and I will tell you the things that will come to pass in them, on those who have done evil and those who have done righteousness in the human race.
