1And after this I saw a thousand thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand, a multitude beyond number or reckoning, who stood before the glory of 1 the glory of: some MSS om. the Lord of Spirits. 2I looked, and on the four sides of the Lord of Spirits I saw four figures 2 figures: lit. ‘faces’ (and so in verses 3, 8; lxiv. 1). different from those who were standing; 3 M ‘who sleep’; GQT1(?)UD′ ‘who do not sleep’. and I learnt their names, because the angel who went with me made known to me their names, and showed me all the secret things. 3And I heard the voices of those four figures as they sang praises before the Lord of Glory. 4 DYB′ ‘of Spirits’. 4The first voice blesses 5 D′ adds ‘the name of’. the Lord of Spirits for ever and ever. 5And the second voice I heard blessing the Chosen One and the chosen who depend on the Lord of Spirits. 6And the third voice I heard as they petitioned and prayed 6 as they … prayed: so Eth., but perhaps emend to ‘petitioning and praying’. on behalf of those who dwell on the dry ground and supplicate in the name of the Lord of Spirits. 7And the fourth voice I heard driving away the satans, and not allowing them to come before the Lord of Spirits to accuse those who dwell on the dry ground. 8And after this I asked the angel of peace who went with me and showed me everything which is secret, 7 Some Eth.II MSS add ‘and I said to him’. Who are these four figures whom I have seen and whose words I have heard and written down? 9And he said to me, This first one is the holy 8 the holy: Eth.I om. Michael, the merciful and long-suffering; and the second, who is in charge of all the diseases and in charge of all the wounds of the sons of men, is Raphael; and the third, who is in charge of all the powers, is the holy 8 the holy: Eth.I om. Gabriel; and the fourth, who is in charge of the repentance leading to hope 9 the repentance leading to hope: some Eth.II MSS ‘the repentance and hope’; Q corrupt. of those who will inherit eternal life, is 10 GMQT1UD′ ‘is named’. Phanuel. 10And these are the four angels of the Lord Most High; 11 Eth.I ‘the Lord of Spirits’. and the four voices I heard in those days.
