Text Commentary

1This book is the word 1 QD′ ‘This is the book of the words’; Gk.a Aram. ‘The book of the words’. of righteousness and of reproof for the Watchers who are from eternity, as the Holy and 2 Gk.a om. Great One commanded in that vision. 2I saw in my sleep what I will now tell with the tongue of flesh and with my breath which the Great One has given to men in the mouth, 3 and with my breath…in the mouth: so Eth.II; GMQTU corrupt; D′ Gk.a ‘with (D′ ‘and with’) the breath of my (D′ ‘the’) mouth which the Great One has given to men’. that they might speak with it and understand with the heart. 4 Gk.a ‘with them and with understanding of heart’. 3As he has created and appointed men to understand the word of knowledge, so he created and appointed me 5 men to understand…appointed me: Gk.a om. (hmt.). to reprove the Watchers, the sons of heaven. 4And I wrote out your petition, 6 Gk.a ‘the petition of you angels’. but in my vision thus it appeared, that your petition will not be granted to you 7 Gk.a ‘but in my vision this appeared; and your petition has not been accepted’. for all the days of eternity; and complete judgement has been decreed against you, 8 for all the days…against you: Gk.a om., but Aram. supports Eth. and you will not have peace. 9 and you will not have peace: so NP2; all other Eth. MSS ‘and you will have nothing’; Gk.a om., and so probably Aram. 5And from now on you will not ascend 10 Gk.a ‘that you should no longer ascend’. into heaven for all eternity, and it has been decreed that you are to be bound in the earth 11 Gk.a ‘in the bonds of the earth’. for all the days 12 days: so Eth. Aram.; Gk.a ‘generations’. of eternity. 6And before this you will have seen 13 Gk.a ‘and that before these things you should see’. the destruction of your beloved sons, and you will not be able to enjoy them, 14 and you…enjoy them: Gk.a ‘and that you will have no enjoyment in them’. but they will fall before you by the sword. 7And your petition will not be granted in respect of them, nor in respect of yourselves. And while you weep and supplicate, you do not speak a single word from the writing which I have written. 8And the vision appeared to me as follows: 15 Gk.a ‘And in the vision thus it appeared to me’. Behold clouds called me 16 me: Gk.a om. in the vision, and mist called me, and the path of the stars and flashes of lightning hastened me and drove me, 17 Gk.a ‘and confused me’. and in the 18 Gk.a ‘my’. vision winds caused me to fly and hastened me and lifted me up into heaven. 19 and hastened me…into heaven: Gk.a ‘and lifted me up and brought me into heaven’. 9And I proceeded until I came near to a wall which was built of hail stones, and a tongue of fire surrounded it, and it began to make me afraid. 20 which was built…me afraid: so Eth., but D′ reads ‘tongues’ instead of ‘a tongue’; Gk.a ‘of a building built of hail stones and tongues of fire around them, and they began to make me afraid’. 10And I went into the tongue 21 D′ Gk.a ‘tongues’. of fire and came near to a large house which was built of hail stones, and the wall of that house was like a mosaic made of hail stones, 22 and the wall…of hail stones: Gk.a ‘and the walls of the house were like slabs of stone, and all the slabs were of snow’. and its floor was snow. 23 Gk.a ‘and the foundations were of snow’. 11Its roof was 24 Gk.a ‘And the roofs were’. like the path of the stars and flashes of lightning, and among them were fiery Cherubim, and their heaven was like water. 12And there was a fire burning around its wall, 25 Eth.I N ‘around the wall’; Gk.a ‘around the walls’. and its door was ablaze 26 Gk.a ‘and the doors were ablaze’. with fire. 13And I went into that house, and it was hot as fire and cold as snow, and there was neither pleasure nor life 27 GMQU ‘no pleasure of life’; D′ ‘nothing’; Gk.a ‘no food of life’. in it. 14Fear covered me and trembling took hold of me. And as I was shaking and trembling, I fell on my face. 28 on my face: Gk.a om. And I saw in the 18 Gk.a ‘my’. 15vision, and behold, another house, which was larger than the former, and all its doors were open before me, and it was built 29 another house…and it was built’: D′ ‘a door before me, 〈and〉 another house, which was larger than the former, and all of it was built’; Gk.a ‘another door open before me, and a house larger than the former, and all of it was built’. Aram probably had the same order as D′ Gk.a. of a tongue 30 GMUD′ Gk.a ‘of tongues’. of fire. 16And in everything it so excelled 31 Gk.a ‘and all of it so excelling’. in glory and splendour and size that I am unable to describe to you its glory and its size. 17And its floor was fire, and above were lightning 32 GMTUD′ Gk.a ‘flashes of lightning’. and the path of the stars, and its roof also was a burning fire. 18And I looked and I saw in it 33 in it: Gk.a om. a high throne, and its appearance was like ice and its surrounds like the shining sun 34 and its surrounds…sun: Gk.a ‘and a wheel as of the shining sun’. and the sound of Cherubim. 35 and the sound of Cherubim: so Eth. The text does not inspire confidence, but Gk.a is corrupt. 19And from underneath the high 36 high: Eth.I Gk.a om. throne there flowed out rivers of burning fire 37 Gk.a ‘burning rivers of fire’. so that it was impossible to look 38 T2 Gk.a ‘so that I could not look’. at it. 39 at it: GMTUAKP1C′ Gk.a om. 20And He who is great in glory 40 GMQT1UD′Y Gk.a ‘And the Great Glory’. sat on it, and his raiment was brighter than the sun, and whiter than any snow. 41 and his raiment…snow: Gk.a ‘his raiment was like the appearance of the sun, brighter and whiter than any snow’. 21And no angel could enter, 42 Gk.a adds ‘into this house’. and at the appearance of the face of him who is honoured and praised no creature of flesh could look. 43 and at the appearance…look: GTUD′ ‘and look at the face of him who is honoured and praised, and no creature of flesh could look at him’; Gk.a ‘and look at his face because of the magnificence and glory, and no creature of flesh could look at him’. 22A sea of fire 44 Eth. I some Eth. II MSS Gk.a ‘A fire’. burnt around him, and a great fire stood before him, and none of those around him came near to him. Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him, 45 and none…before him: Gk.a ‘and no one came near to him. In a circle ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him’. but he needed no holy counsel. 23And the Holy Ones 46 but he needed…Holy Ones: so T Eth.II; D′ ‘but he needed no counsel. And the holiness of the Holy Ones (i.e. ‘And the most Holy Ones’)’; GMQU corrupt; Gk.a ‘and his every word was deed. And the most holy angels’. No version inspires complete confidence. who were near to him did not leave by night or day, 47 or day: GMQT1UD′ Gk.a om. and did not depart from him. 24And until then I had a covering on my face, 48 Gk.a ‘I had been prostrate on my face’. as I trembled. And the Lord called me with his own mouth and said to me, Come hither, Enoch, to my holy word. And he lifted me up 49 to my holy word. And he lifted me up: Gk.a ‘and hear my word. And one of the Holy Ones came to me, and raised me, and stood me up’. and brought me near to the door. And I looked, 50 Gk.a ‘And I bowed’. with my face down.
