Text Commentary

1And Enoch went and said to Azazel, 1 Gk.a (corrupt) ‘And Enoch said to Azael, Go’. You will not have peace. A severe sentence has come out against you that you should be bound. 2And you will have neither rest, 2 Gk.a ‘clemency’; GMQD′ corrupt. nor mercy, 3 nor mercy: Eth.I Gk.a om. nor the granting of any petition, because of the wrong which you have taught, and because of all the works of blasphemy 4 Gk.a ‘impiety’. and wrong and sin which you have shown to the sons of men. 5 GMQT1UD′P1 Gk.a ‘to men’. 3Then I went and spoke to them all together, 6 together: Gk.a om. and they were all afraid; fear and trembling seized them. 4And they asked me to write out for them the record of a petition that they might receive forgiveness, and to take the record of their petition up 7 Gk.a ‘and to read the record of the petition out’. to 8 Eth.I AKP1 Gk.a ‘before’. the Lord in heaven. 9 GMTUD′ Gk.a ‘of heaven’. 5For they themselves were not able from then on to speak, and they did not raise 10 Gk.a ‘or to raise’. their eyes to heaven out of shame for the sins for which they had been condemned. 6And then I wrote out the record of their petition and their 11 GMT1UD′ Gk.a ‘the’, but Aram. apparently read ‘their’. supplication in regard to their spirits 12 in regard to their spirits: so Eth. Gk.a, but possibly a mistranslation of ‘in regard to themselves’. and the deeds of each one of them, 13 and the deeds of each one of them: Gk.a om., but Aram. supports Eth. and in regard to what they asked, namely that they should obtain absolution and forbearance. 7And I went and sat down by the waters of Dan in Dan 14 in Dan: Gk.a ‘in the land of Dan’. which is southwest of Hermon; and I read out the record of their petition until I fell asleep. 8And behold a dream 15 Gk.a ‘dreams’. came to me, and visions fell upon me, and I saw a vision 16 U Gk.a Aram. ‘visions’. of wrath, namely that I should speak to the sons of heaven and reprove them. 17 namely that I…reprove them: Gk.a ‘and a voice came, saying, Speak to the sons of heaven to reprove them’. 9And I woke up and went to them, and they were all sitting gathered together as they mourned in Ubelseyael, 18 Gk.a ‘Ebelsata’. The forms in Eth. and Gk.a are possibly corruptions of ‘Abilene’. which is between Lebanon and Senir, with their faces covered. 10And I spoke before them 19 And I spoke before them: so Eth. Aram.; Gk.a (corrupt) ‘Before them and I reported to them’. all the visions which I had seen in my 20 GMT1UD′KP1 Gk.a om. sleep, and I began to speak these 21 Gk.a ‘the’. words of righteousness and to reprove 22 and to reprove: Gk.a ‘reproving’. the Watchers of heaven.
