Text Commentary

1And it came to pass, when the sons of men had increased, that in those days 1 in those days: Gk.s om. there were born to them 2 to them: Gk.a om. fair and beautiful 3 and beautiful: Gk.s om. daughters. 2And the angels, the sons of heaven, saw them and desired them. 4 And the angels … desired them: Gk.s ‘And the Watchers desired them and went astray after them’. And they said to one another, Come, 5 Come: Gk.s om. let us choose for ourselves wives from the children of men, 6 Gk.a ‘from men’, i.e. ‘from among mankind’; Gk.s ‘from the daughters of the men of the earth’. and let us beget for ourselves children. 7 and let us beget … children: Gk.s om. 3And Semyaza, who was their leader, said to them, I fear that you may not wish this deed to be done, 8 Gk.a s ‘to do this deed’. and that I alone will pay for this great sin. 9 GMT1 (?) U Gk.a s ‘a great sin’; D′ corrupt. 4And they all answered him and said, 10 and said: GMD′ Gk.a om. Let us all swear an oath, and bind 11 GMTD′ Gk.a ‘and all bind’; Q is defective. one another with curses not to alter this plan, but to carry out this plan effectively. 12 but … effectively: C′D′ ‘but to do this deed’; U is defective; Gk.a ‘until we have accomplished it and have done this deed’; Gk.s ‘until we have accomplished it’. 5Then they all swore together and all 13 all: Eth.I AD Gk.a s om. bound one another with curses to it. 14 to it: Gk.s om. 6And they were in all two hundred, and they came down on Ardis which is the summit of Mount Hermon. 15 Gk.s ‘And they were two hundred who came down in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon’, and so probably Aram.; Gk.a omits the entire verse by hmt. And they called the mountain Hermon, because on it they swore and bound one another with curses. 7And these are the names of their leaders: 16 The following list of names was copied out in the wrong order in Gk.a through an easily recognisable mistake, but the evidence of Gk.a is given in the correct order in the notes. The list also occurs, with some variations, in lxix.2 and is partially reproduced in viii.3. Many of the names suffered corruption during the course of their transmission, and the versions now offer a large number of variants, not all of which are recorded below. Semyaza, 17 Aram. ‘Shemihazah’. who was their leader, Urakiba, Ramiel, 18 Urakiba (or ‘Arakiba’), Ramiel: most Eth. MSS in vi. 7 write these two names as one word; the division into two follows D′, and external evidence confirms that its division is correct. Gk.s ‘Atarqouph, Araqiel’; Gk.a ‘Arathak, Kimbra, Sammane’. For the second name in the list Aram. apparently read ‘Arataqqiph’ or ‘Arataqoph’. Kokabiel, 19 Eth.II ‘Akibeel’. Tamiel, 20 Gk.s ‘Horammame’; Aram. defective. Ramiel, Daniel, 21 Gk.s ‘Sampsich’. Ezeqiel, 22 Gk.s ‘Zaqiel’; Aram. ‘Ziqiel’. Baraqiel, 23 Eth.II ‘Saraqiel’; Gk.s ‘Balqiel’. Ananel, Zaqiel, 27 So D′N: other Eth. readings in vi. 7 appear to be corruptions of Zaqiel. Gk.s ‘Thausael’; Gk.a ‘Raqiel’; Aram. ‘Satherel’ or ‘Sathawel’. Samsiel, Sartael, 28 So most Eth. MSS: GM ‘Satarel’; other Eth. readings are corruptions of Sartael or Satarel; Gk.s ‘Sarinas’; Gk.a ‘Sathiel’; Aram. ‘Sahriel’. …, 29 The seventeenth name has dropped out of the list in Eth; Gk.s ‘Eumiel’; Gk.a ‘Thoniel’; Aram. defective. Turiel, Yomiel, Araziel. 30 Gk.s ‘Sariel’; Gk.a ‘Atriel’; Aram. uncertain. 8These are the leaders of the two hundred angels, and of all the others with them. 31 So T2 Eth.II: G ‘These are their leaders of tens, and of all the others with them’, and this is probably what is intended by the other Eth.I MSS; Gk.a ‘These are their leaders 〈over〉 tens’; Gk.s ‘These and all the others (vii.i. in the …)’.
