The Oxford Study Bible Study Bible supplemented with commentary from scholars of various religions.

The Translation

The translation was carried out by a broadly ecumenical team of distinguished scholars. There is a “Preface” to the translation on pp. xv-xvii which briefly tells both the story and the history of the translation. The translation is, as one would expect, based on the best manuscript evidence and provides important alternative meanings in translators' footnotes. But it is especially notable for its English style. To a degree seldom achieved in committee translations, the language of this version is modern and fluid. Indeed, the readability of the Revised English Bible and its predecessor, the New English Bible, led to their becoming offerings of the Book-of-the-Month Club. The ancient-to-modern language translation does not make reading effortless, but certainly sense and meaning are more accessible in the smooth idiom of this superb translation.
