1 GOD said to Jacob, ‘Go up now to Bethel and, when you have settled there, erect an altar to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.’ 2Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods which you have; then purify yourselves, and put on fresh clothes. 3We are to set off for Bethel, so that I can erect an altar there to the God who answered me when I was in distress; he has been with me wherever I have gone.’ 4They handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and the ear-rings they were wearing, and he buried them under the terebinth tree near Shechem. 5As they moved off, the towns round about were panic-stricken, so that they were unable to pursue Jacob's sons. 6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz, that is Bethel, in Canaan. 7There he built an altar, and called the place El-bethel a 35:7 El-bethel: that is God of Bethel. , because it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother. 8Rebecca's nurse Deborah died and was buried under the oak below Bethel, and Jacob called it Allon-bakuth b 35:8 Allon-bakuth: that is Oak of Weeping. .

9God appeared again to Jacob after his return from Paddan-aram and blessed him. 10God said: ‘Jacob is now your name, but it is going to be Jacob no longer: your name is to be Israel.’

So Jacob was called Israel. 11God said to him:

‘I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and increase: a nation, a host of nations will come from you; kings also will descend from you. 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants also I shall give this land.’

13When God left him, 14Jacob raised a sacred pillar of stone in the place where God had spoken with him, and he offered a drink-offering on it and poured oil over it. 15Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

16They moved from Bethel, and when there was still some distance to go to Ephrathah, Rachel went into labour and her pains were severe. 17While they were on her, the midwife said, ‘Do not be afraid, for this is another son for you.’ 18Then with her last breath, as she was dying, she named him Ben-oni c 35:18 Ben-oni: that is Son of my Grief. , but his father called him Benjamin d Benjamin: that is Son of the Right Hand or Son of Good Luck. . 19So Rachel died and was buried by the side of the road to Ephrathah, that is Bethlehem. 20Over her grave Jacob set up a sacred pillar; and to this day it is known as the Pillar of Rachel's Grave. 21Then continuing his journey Israel pitched his tent on the other side of Migdal-eder. 22While Israel was living in that district, Reuben lay with his father's concubine Bilhah; and Israel came to hear of it.

The sons of Jacob were twelve. 23The sons of Leah: Jacob's firstborn Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25The sons of Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali. 26The sons of Leah's slave-girl Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were Jacob's sons, born to him in Paddan-aram. 27Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre near Kiriath-arba, that is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. 28Isaac was a hundred and eighty years old when he breathed his last. 29He died and was gathered to his father's kin at this very great age, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
