8 CALLING to mind all that the Lord had done, Mardochaeus uttered this prayer. 9‘O Lord, Lord and King, Ruler over all, for the whole creation is under your authority, and when it is your will to save Israel there is none who can oppose you: 10you made heaven and earth and every wonderful thing under heaven; 11you are Lord of all, and there is none who can resist you, the Lord. 12You know all things; you know, Lord, that it was not from insolence or arrogance or vainglory that I refused to bow before this proud Haman, 13for to save Israel I would gladly have kissed the soles of his feet! 14But I acted in this way so as not to hold a man in greater honour than God; I shall not bow before any but you, my Lord, and it is not from arrogance that I refuse this homage. 15Now, O Lord, God and King, God of Abraham, spare your people, for our enemies are bent on bringing us to ruin, and they have set their hearts upon the destruction of your chosen people, yours from the beginning. 16Do not disregard your own possession which you ransomed and brought out of Egypt for yourself. 17Hear my prayer, and have mercy on your heritage; turn our mourning into feasting, that we may live to sing of your name, O Lord. Do not put to silence the lips that give you praise.’ 18The Israelites cried aloud with all their might, for death stared them in the face.
