1 IN the fullness of his joy Tobit wrote this prayer:

Praise to the ever-living God and to his kingdom. 2He both punishes and shows mercy; he brings men down to the grave below, and he brings them up from the great destruction; nothing can escape his power. 3Israelites, give him thanks in the sight of the nations, for, having scattered you among them, 4he has shown you his greatness there. In the sight of every living creature exalt him, for he is our Lord and our God, our Father and God for ever.

5Though for your wickedness he will punish you, yet he will show mercy to you all, wherever you may be dispersed among the nations. 6When you turn to him with all your heart and soul and act in loyal obedience to him, then he will turn to you; he will hide his face from you no longer. Consider now what he has done for you, and with full voice give him thanks; praise the righteous Lord and exalt the eternal King.

In the land of my exile I give thanks to him and declare his might and greatness to a sinful nation. Sinners, turn and do what is right in his eyes; who knows, he may yet welcome you and show mercy. 7I shall exalt my God and rejoice in the King of heaven. 8Let all men tell of his majesty and in Jerusalem give him thanks.

9O Jerusalem, Holy City, he will punish you for what your sons have done, but he will have mercy once more on the righteous. 10Give thanks to the Lord for his goodness and praise to the eternal King. Your sanctuary will be rebuilt for you with rejoicing. May he give happiness to all your exiles and cherish for all generations those in distress. 11Your radiance will shine to the ends of the earth. Many nations will come to you from afar, to your holy name from every corner of the earth, bearing gifts in their hands for the King of heaven. In you endless generations will utter their joy; the name of the chosen city will endure for ever and ever. 12Accursed will be all who speak harshly to you, all who wreak destruction, pulling down your walls, overthrowing your towers, and burning your houses; but for ever blessed will be those who rebuild you. 13Come then, be joyful for the righteous, for they will all be gathered together and will praise the eternal Lord. 14How happy will they be who love you and happy those who rejoice in your prosperity, happy those who grieve for you in all your afflictions! They will rejoice over you and behold all your joy for ever.

15My soul, praise the Lord, the great King, 16for Jerusalem will be built again to be his dwelling-place for all time. How happy I shall be when the remnant of my descendants see your splendour and give thanks to the King of heaven! The gates of Jerusalem will be built of sapphire and emerald, and all the walls of costly stones. The towers of Jerusalem will be built of gold, their battlements of the finest gold. 17The streets of Jerusalem will be paved with garnets and jewels of Ophir. 18Jerusalem's gates will sing hymns of joy and all the houses in her will say, ‘Alleluia! Praise to the God of Israel!’ In you, O Jerusalem, his holy name will be praised for ever and ever.
