Prayer for Divine Help

1For the leader; with wind instruments. A psalm of David.

I

2Hear my words, O LORD; listen to my sighing. y Pss 86, 6; 130, 1–2 . 3Hear my cry for help, my king, my God! To you I pray, O LORD; 4at dawn you will hear my cry; at dawn I will plead before you and wait. z Wis 16, 28 .

II

5You are not a god who delights in evil; no wicked person finds refuge with you; 6the arrogant cannot stand before you. You hate all who do evil; 7you destroy all who speak falsely. a Ps 101, 7; Wis 14, 9; Hb 1, 13 . Murderers and deceivers the LORD abhors.

III

8But I can enter your house because of your great love. I can worship in your holy temple because of my reverence for you, LORD. b Ps 138, 2; Jon 2, 5 . 9Guide me in your justice because of my foes; make straight your way before me. c Ps 23, 3; Prv 4, 11; Is 26, 7 .

IV

10For there is no sincerity in their mouths; their hearts are corrupt. Their throats* are open graves; d Rom 3, 13 . on their tongues are subtle lies. 11Declare them guilty, God; make them fall by their own devices. e Ps 141, 10 . Drive them out for their many sins; they have rebelled against you.

V

12Then all who take refuge in you will be glad and forever shout for joy. f Ps 64, 11 . Protect them that you may be the joy of those who love your name. 13For you, LORD, bless the just; you surround them with favor like a shield.
