The Assyrian Empire
Adrian Curtis
Much of our knowledge of the Assyrians comes from records they left behind, in particular through royal annals. In using these records, it is necessary to bear in mind such tendencies as the wish to minimize setbacks and defeats and maximize victories won and territories conquered. Nevertheless, it is possible to use such material to help to provide a picture of the fluctuating fortunes of the Assyrian Empire and to highlight how it impinged upon the story of the ancient Israelites.
