A maskil: for Ethan the Ezrahite

1I SHALL sing always of the loving deeds of the LORD; throughout every generation I shall proclaim your faithfulness. 2I said: Your love will stand firm for ever; in the heavens you have established your faithfulness.

3I have made a covenant with the one I have chosen, I have sworn on oath to my servant David: 4‘I shall establish your line for ever, I shall make your throne endure for all generations.’ [Selah

5Let the heavens praise your wonders, LORD; let the assembly of the angels exalt your faithfulness. 6In the skies who is there like the LORD, who like the LORD in the court of heaven, 7a God dreaded in the council of the angels, great a 89:7 great: so Gk; Heb. greatly. and terrible above all who stand about him? 8 LORD God of Hosts, who is like you? Your strength b 89:8 Your strength: prob. rdg; Heb. obscure. and faithfulness, LORD, are all around you. 9You rule the raging of the sea, calming the turmoil of its waves. 10You crushed and slew the monster Rahab and scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

11The heavens are yours, the earth yours also; you founded the world and all that is in it. 12You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon echo your name. 13Strength of arm and valour are yours; your hand is mighty, your right hand lifted high; 14your throne is founded on righteousness and justice; love and faithfulness are in attendance on you.

15Happy the people who have learnt to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your countenance, LORD! 16In your name they rejoice all day long; your righteousness will lift them up. 17You are yourself the strength in which they glory; through your favour we hold our heads high. 18To the LORD belongs our shield, to the Holy One of Israel our king.

19A time came when you spoke in a vision, declaring to your faithful servant: I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20I have found David my servant and anointed him with my sacred oil. 21My hand will be ready to help him, my arm to give him strength. 22No enemy will outwit him, no wicked person will oppress him; 23I shall crush his adversaries before him and strike down those who are hostile to him. 24My faithfulness and love will be with him and through my name he will hold his head high. 25I shall establish his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers. 26He will call to me, ‘You are my father, my God, my rock where I find safety.’ 27I shall give him the rank of firstborn, highest among the kings of the earth. 28I shall maintain my love for him for ever and be faithful in my covenant with him. 29I shall establish his line for ever and his throne as long as the heavens endure.

30If his children forsake my law and do not conform to my judgements, 31if they violate my statutes and do not observe my commandments, 32then I shall punish their disobedience with the rod, their iniquity with lashes. 33Yet I shall not deprive him of my love, nor swerve from my faithfulness; 34I shall not violate my covenant, nor alter what I have promised. 35I have sworn by my holiness once and for all, I shall not break my word to David: 36his posterity will continue for ever, his throne before me like the sun; 37like the moon it will endure for ever, a faithful witness in the sky. [Selah

38Yet you have spurned your anointed one, you have rejected him and raged against him, 39you have renounced the covenant with your servant, defiled his crown and flung it to the ground. 40You have breached all his walls and laid his fortresses in ruins; 41every passer-by plunders him, and he suffers his neighbours' taunts. 42You have increased the power of his adversaries and brought joy to all his foes; 43you have driven back his drawn sword and left him without support in battle. 44You have put an end to his splendour and hurled his throne to the ground; 45you have cut short the days of his youth and covered him as with a cloak of shame. [Selah

46How long, LORD, will you hide yourself from sight? How long will your wrath blaze like a fire? 47Remember how fleeting is our life! Have you created all mankind to no purpose? 48Who can live and not see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol c 89:48 Sheol: or the underworld. ? [Selah 49Where are your former loving deeds, Lord, which you promised faithfully to David? 50Remember, Lord, the taunts hurled at your servant, how I have borne in my heart the calumnies of the nations d 89:50 the calumnies … nations: prob. rdg; Heb. all of many peoples. ; 51for your enemies have taunted us, LORD, taunted your anointed king at every step.

52Blessed be the LORD for ever. Amen and Amen.
