1Then a branch will grow from the stock of Jesse, and a shoot will spring from his roots. 2On him the spirit of the LORD will rest: a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD; 3and in the fear of the LORD will be his delight. He will not judge by outward appearances or decide a case on hearsay; 4but with justice he will judge the poor and defend the humble in the land with equity; like a rod his verdict will strike the ruthless a 11:4 ruthless: prob. rdg; Heb. land. , and with his word he will slay the wicked. 5He will wear the belt of justice, and truth will be his girdle.

6Then the wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion will feed b 11:6 will feed: so Scroll; Heb. and the buffalo. together, with a little child to tend them. 7The cow and the bear will be friends, and their young will lie down together; and the lion will eat straw like cattle. 8The infant will play over the cobra's hole, and the young child dance over c 11:8 dance over: prob. rdg; Heb. obscure. the viper's nest. 9There will be neither hurt nor harm in all my holy mountain; for the land will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

10On that day a scion from the root of Jesse will arise like a standard to rally the peoples; the nations will resort to him, and his abode will be glorious.

11On that day the Lord will exert his power a second time to recover the remnant of his people from Assyria and Egypt, from Pathros and Cush, from Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the islands of the sea.

12He will hoist a standard for the nations and gather those dispersed from Israel; he will assemble Judah's scattered people from the four corners of the earth. 13Ephraim's jealousy will cease, and enmity towards Judah will end. Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor will Judah be hostile towards Ephraim. 14They will swoop down on the Philistine flank in the west and together plunder the tribes of the east: Edom and Moab will be in their clutches, and Ammon will be subject to them. 15The LORD will divide the tongue of the Egyptian sea. He will wave his hand over the Euphrates to bring a mighty d 11:15 mighty: so Gk; Heb. glow. wind, and will split it into seven wadis so that it may be crossed dry-shod. 16So there will be a causeway for the remnant of his people, for the remnant rescued from Assyria, as there was for the Israelites when they came up from Egypt.
