1 YOU ARE the children of the LORD your God: you must not gash yourselves or shave your forelocks a 14:1 your forelocks: lit. between your eyes. in mourning for the dead. 2You are a people holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you out of all peoples on earth to be his special possession.

3You must not eat any abominable thing. 4These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goat, 5buck, gazelle, roebuck, ibex, white-rumped deer, long-horned antelope, and rock-goat. 6You may eat any hoofed animal which has cloven hoofs and also chews the cud; 7those which only chew the cud or only have cloven hoofs you must not eat. These are: the camel, the hare, and the rock-badger b 14:7 rock-badger: or rock-rabbit. , because they chew the cud but do not have cloven hoofs; they are unclean for you; 8and the pig, because it has cloven hoofs but does not chew the cud, it is unclean for you. You are not to eat their flesh or even touch their dead carcasses. 9Of creatures that live in water these may be eaten: all that have fins and scales; 10but you may not eat any that have neither fins nor scales; they are unclean for you. 11You may eat any clean bird. 12These are the birds you may not eat: the griffon-vulture c 14:12 griffon-vulture: or eagle. , the black vulture, the bearded vulture d bearded vulture: or ossifrage. , 13the kite e 14:13 kite: so Samar., cp. Lev. 11:14 ; Heb. has an unknown word. , every kind of falcon f falcon: so some MSS; others add kite. , 14every kind of crow g 14:14 crow: or raven. , 15the desert-owl, the short-eared owl, the long-eared owl, every kind of hawk, 16the tawny owl, the screech-owl, the little owl, 17the horned owl, the osprey, the fisher-owl, 18the stork h 14:18 stork: or heron. , the various kinds of cormorant, the hoopoe, and the bat.

19All swarming winged creatures are unclean for you; they may not be eaten. 20You may eat any clean winged creature.

21You must not eat anything that has died a natural death. You may give it to aliens residing among you, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; but you are a people holy to the LORD your God.

Do not boil a kid in its mother's milk.

22Year by year you are to set aside a tithe of all the produce of your sowing, of everything that grows on the land. 23You must eat it in the presence of the LORD your God in the place which he will choose as a dwelling for his name—the tithe of your grain and new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your cattle and sheep, so that for all time you may learn to fear the LORD your God. 24When the LORD your God has blessed you with prosperity, and the place where he will choose to set his name is too far away and the journey too great for you to carry your tithe, 25then you may convert it into money. Tie up the money and take it with you to the place which the LORD your God will choose. 26There you may spend it as you choose on cattle or sheep, wine or strong drink, or anything else you please, and there feast with rejoicing, both you and your family, in the presence of the LORD your God.

27Also, the Levites who live in your settlements must not suffer neglect at your hands, for they have no holding of ancestral land among you. 28At the end of every third year you are to bring out all the tithe of your produce for that year and leave it in your settlements 29so that the Levites, who have no holding of ancestral land among you, and the aliens, orphans, and widows in your settlements may come and have plenty to eat. If you do this the LORD your God will bless you in everything to which you set your hand.
